Although it is possible to characterize potential stem cells on different levels, including their (marker) phenotype, their biochemical activity or their genomic expression profile, how these characteristics translate into a functional potential or into a particular response/activity of the cell remains unresolved. Mathematical and computational tools can help biologists to interpret the experimental data, to select and design experimental strategies, and to anticipate the impact of manipulations to a system and its response.
