Erin Campbell is the blogger behind HighMag Blog, a blog that features stunning cell biology images a few times a week. Every month she will choose one of her favourite pictures to feature in this gallery, accompanied by a description that's accessible to non-specialists.
This gallery is brought to you in collaboration with The Node, where Erin also regularly posts images.
Smile of a Stem Cell is composed of 54 photographic art works (in 56 pieces), produced by 22 artists (who are also scientists working in ESTOOLS laboratories in 7 different countries).
Most of the pictures have a real scientific as well as artistic value, as they originate from ESTOOLS' ongoing research projects. Image creators provided a creative title for each of their pictures, illustrating their artistic vision, and a scientific description, to remind the public of the origins of the image. Artistic value is accessible to a wide audience, and as a neutral expression of scientific reality the pictures promote thoughts and discussion without wielding influence. This exhibition is a tool for scientists/artists to discuss their work with friends and relatives, as well as learning to engage a non-scientific public with stem cell research.
Smile of a Stem Cell creates a bridge for the general public to reach top-level science and for scientists to affirm their societal role.
