Jan Barfoot is Public Engagement and Information Manager for EuroStemCell and is based at the University of Edinburgh's MRC Centre for Regenerative Medicine.
Following a PhD in Cancer Cell Biology, Jan did an unconventional post-doc at the Institute of Cell Biology, University of Edinburgh developing genetics-based practical work for secondary schools and delivering hands-on biotechnology / bioethical workshops and events. In 2004, she became Deputy Director of the Scottish Initiative for Biotechnology Education (SIBE) and went on to facilitate numerous collaborative public engagement projects. She also initiated a University-wide training programme in research communication skills and convened a post-graduate science communication team. Following secondment as the Project Manager for the UK research council's Researchers in Residence programme, Jan returned to SIBE to develop an undergraduate honours course in Science Communication and produce a booklet 'Stem Cells: Science and Ethics'. Jan is currently the Public Engagement and Information Manager for EuroStemCell (EC-funded stem cell research consortium). She recently worked with Kate Doherty to develop the interactive version of the Hope Beyond Hype comic and has particular interest in supporting the consortium's efforts to engage patients and policy-makers with stem cell research.
