Call for Abstracts: International Retreat on Moral Frontiers in Regenerative Medicine

Friedrich Schiller University Jena, Germany in cooperation with Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg, Germany is organizing the International Retreat on “Moral Frontiers in Regenerative Medicine pertaining to the Use of Human Embryonic and Induced Pluripotent Stem (iPS) Cells” in Halle (Saale), Germany, June 18th – 22nd, 2017. The International Retreat on Ethical, Legal and Social Implications (ELSI) in Life Sciences is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).

The international and interdisciplinary retreat investigates whether the commercial and/or industrial use of human embryonic and induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells in regenerative medicine can be approved by ethics committees to conduct clinical trials and/or can be approved by pharmaceutical authorities (regulators) for placing on the market. The retreat will focus on ethical, legal, and social/socio-economic questions of such therapies. The country perspective of the retreat will be Germany, the United Kingdom, and the USA/Canada.

Young scientists with a university degree/PhD in (Bio)Ethics, Philosophy, Theology, Applied Social Sciences or Law with a focus on life sciences and/or medicinal topics as well as physicians and life scientists are called upon to send their application to attend the retreat. The retreat is open to applicants from all over the world, however the contributions have to focus on (at least) one of the countries investigated by the retreat.

The retreat is limited to 15 participants. Admission is free; travel expenses as well as accommodation will be covered by the organizers. Participants will be invited to discuss the topics of the retreat with international renowned professionals. To apply please send a scientific abstract (500 words maximum, English) and a short academic biography by e-mail to Susanne.Mueller@uni-jena.de latest by February, 28th 2017, (midnight, German time). The scientific abstract has to focus on the topic of the retreat under the view of the scientific discipline of the applicant. The abstract will be the criterion for the evaluation process and is supposed to be basis for the manuscript which has to be presented during the retreat and which will be published consecutively.
